Budget

The coastal city of Lagos, located on Portugal’s western Algarve, has been an up-and-coming tourist destination for years. All ages can enjoy the region’s stunning beauty and natural attractions, from the rugged coastline and pristine beaches to the varied terrain and lush gardens.

With the market cornered on seaside vistas, stunning beaches, quaint locales and Portugal’s vibrant culture around every corner, it’s easy to see how this city gained international attention.

While rich in heritage and natural beauty, Lagos can actually be budget-friendly, too. Luckily, the city is not completely overrun by mass tourism, inflated prices and tourist traps — this is still one locale you can do like a local. Bring the kids for a stunning family beach vacation and take advantage of all the outdoor wonders and blue grotto explorations without going over budget.

One of the best ways to enjoy Algarve’s many beaches and attractions: Fill up on all the free activities your family can handle. There’s still a lot of beaching, climbing and city exploring to be had for free, or close to it, in Lagos.

The sandstone cliffs lining the western Algarve, known as Ponta de Piedade, are a must-see for tourists and kids of all ages. While the little ones might not want to stray too far on the cliff-side walk, parents can still have fun with kids in tow. Choose a carrier and strap them in, or transition to hand holding.

After years of erosion, the cliffs jut out of the crystal-blue waters with purpose and offer some stunning focal points. Take the winding paths along the water or upgrade to a boat tour leaving Lagos marina for €20–25 a tour, or $22–27. The kids will love getting out on the boat and seeing the towering, statuesque city from another perspective. Who are we kidding — everyone loves that!

Speaking of boat tours, Lagos is one stunning coastal town of caves and grottos you’ll need to get out on the water to fully experience. Fortunately, boat tours are still reasonably priced in this area, with most cave and grotto tours beginning at €20 for adults and €10 for children. For a bit more, typically €40 for 90 minutes or €30 for kids, guests can hop on a boat tour and dolphin watch or catch fresh snapper or group like a Lagos local.

Rugged trails and scenic walks are a dime a dozen in Lagos. Walk along the sand beach, or along the more varied terrain, all boasting walking paths and trails. See the sights on foot for free and get a few steps in along the way.

Talk to the locals or explore on foot. This region is safe for tourists and kids of all ages and easily walk-able.
