Beginning with the most obvious, Margaret Atwood’s new read The Testaments is a sequel to the critically-acclaimed The Handmaid’s Tale and a perfect extension of your family’s summer reading list. While your family may already be fans of the show, cracking open the book that inspired it all is a great way catch up and dig deeper. Begin with the first of the series and set yourselves up for a wild, dark ride.

Another book hot off the presses your thrill-seekers may love: The Institute: A Novel by Stephen King adds to the prolific author’s long list of horror fiction reads. With more film and TV adaptations in the works than any other writer in the genre — some your kids may already be avid fans of — this new one is a great addition to your seasonal, spooky entertainment for teens and older.
For a high school love story with a bit more meat, Frankly in Love is a fall read worth digging into for kids and a guilty pleasure for adults (think To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and you catch my drift). Written by David Yoon, Frankly in Love is the author’s debut novel and already has a movie adaptation to follow — the sign of a perfect teen read. Not a bad idea to get in on the ground floor before the film comes out.
For fantasy, fiction and some romance, The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern is a novel to watch for. Arriving Nov. 5, this secret underground world with fantasy epic themes is a fun transport from reality — especially during your travel down time and flight delays. This one can go every which way for teens and adults.
Sure, you can find all these titles and more online, but you might get more bang for your buck by visiting an independent bookstore near you and shopping the aisles for more fall reading inspiration.
