With an extensive public transportation system, Denmark is easily and affordably accessed by families of all budgets and sizes. Denmark’s national train network allows up to two children, 12 years old and younger, to travel for free with each adult ticket. Parents can travel with children on Copenhagen’s S-trains, buses and metro — allowing for an affordable and efficient family trek through the city.

For slightly older kids, children 16 and younger traveling without a parent pay half the price of an adult ticket. Denmark is considered one of the safest and friendliest destinations, so it isn’t uncommon for young teens to travel with friends and siblings without parental supervision. With that said, this is a family trip, so there may not be too many opportunities to send the kids off on their own.

Ask at the information desk before buying your ticket for more info, but typically children under 3 are free on ferries. Perfect for families on the go looking to get the most out of their trip, Denmark’s top sites are short distances away, allowing travelers to hop on public transportation or hire a car.

Tour the dungeons of Kronborg Castle in Helsingør by day and stroll the streets of Copenhagen by night — all while utilizing the ease and efficiency of Denmark’s public transportation.

While in Denmark, rent a bike and explore the city’s effortless charm. Pose by iconic architecture for photo-ops and stop in the many quaint shops, restaurants and cafés before delving into the sciences at the Experimentarium — the newest science center for families to experiment and tour the Tunnel of Senses and Labyrinth of Light.

Be sure to explore the wonders of Tivoli Gardens with the kids. Take a quick trip to the north and check out the sweeping views of Roskilde Fjord by Viking ship before heading back into town for the night.

One destination you may wish to rent a car will be over Europe’s longest suspension bridge, The Great Belt Bridge, connecting Denmark and Sweden.

With the many quiet spots, changing rooms, child-care services and family-friendly hotels throughout Denmark, it’s even easy to bring the youngest family member along. Explore Denmark’s many attractions, family-friendly restaurants and hotels and bring home a bit of the casual-meets-cosmopolitan attitude.
