There was a time when Jekyll Island, one of Georgia’s barrier Golden Isles, was once a private playground for the ultrarich. But 2022 marks the 75th anniversary of this gorgeous island becoming property of the state of Georgia. Seventy-five years ago, the property and land were turned into a state park, making it the perfect place for family travelers to enjoy the beauty of the Georgia coastline.
While the island is a great place to get away from the rush of civilization, there is plenty to do on Jekyll Island. Sumer Waves water park, open Saturday and Sunday, May–September, features water slides for kids of all ages. The island’s seven different beaches let you take a salty dip, relax on the soft sands and enjoy the unique scenery at beaches like Driftwood Beach, where driftwood monuments adorn the shoreline.
If you aren’t interested in going for a swim, there is still tons of fun waiting for you. Check out the local wildlife at Georgia Sea Turtle Center, open daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m. (admission is $10 for adults and $8 for kids 8 and under). Play some mini golf at Jekyll Island Mini Golf, where a day of play is $16 for adults and $11 for kids 6–11. Become an explorer and rent a bike to explore the more than 22 miles of bike trails weaving around the island. Golfing and tennis provide even more opportunities to enjoy the fresh air, while Mosaic, the Jekyll Island Museum and tours of the island’s historic district are a great way to learn about the island’s history.
The island features 11 different hotels and resorts, ensuring there is a great place to stay for every budget. There are also campsites available if you are looking to enjoy a more rugged stay on the island, easily accessible by car on the Jekyll Island Causeway.
