North America

Deep in the desert lies an underrated gem for multigenerational family travelers looking to explore New Mexico. Las Cruces, nestled in the shadow of the Organ Mountains, is full of fun things for families with members of all ages. From outdoor adventures to food, shopping to games, check out these great activities for everyone, from little tykes to seniors on your next trip to this southern New Mexico town.

New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum is a great place for the whole family to discover the 4,000-year history of the area’s farming and ranching traditions. While the little ones will enjoy attractions like the animals on the livestock tour, there are plenty of hands-on interactive experiences for adults too, like blacksmithing demonstrations and water dowsing lessons teaching you how to find underground water.

White Sands National Park is another great adventure for the whole family. Located about an hour east of Las Cruces, this beautiful park offers great outdoors recreation like sand surfing down the gypsum sand dunes, picnicking and horseback riding, along with a new experience for this summer: ranger-led, 1-mile night hikes through the dunes on nights with a full moon.

Be sure to spend some time exploring the beautiful downtown of Las Cruces, where there is something for every member of the family. Spots like Rad Retrocade, where kids under 21 are welcome with a parent until 8 p.m.; the Farmers and Crafts Market of Las Cruces, where you can shop for anything from local produce to handicrafts; and Nopalito Restaurant, serving delicious and authentic Mexican food, giving the whole family an authentic feel for the Las Cruces vibe.
