Nevada has no shortage of adventures for family travelers, from the non-stop excitement of the Las Vegas Strip to camping and watersports at places like Lake Mead National Recreation Area. This fall, however, Mother Nature has an unusual treat in store. On Oct.14, an annual solar eclipse is expected to occur, placing much of the state in the path of totality for the first time in 11 years.
During an annual solar eclipse, the moon passes in front of the sun, leaving only the outer rim of the sun visible. The effect, known as a “Ring of Fire,” will last for more than three minutes. The path of totality will cross the state in a diagonal path from the northwest to the east, giving travelers plenty of places to view the full eclipse in towns like Elko and Winnemucca, along with places like Eureka, Wells and Empire, partially within the path.
The town of Ely, on the eastern side of the state, will make the most of its prime location by hosting a week-long festival dedicated to the eclipse. In addition to the main event on the morning of Oct. 14, the White Pine Ring of Fire Eclipse Festival will feature fun events like group bike rides, an aliens and UFO event at White Pine Public Museum, and a Punkin’ Chunkin’.
The event is not only a great way to experience a unique celestial event, but also to give the family a chance to explore the rural parts of Nevada often overlooked in favor of the glitz and excitement of Las Vegas.
