Travel Tips

Austria’s lush natural landscape, quaint villages and bustling cities happen to be an ideal destination for traveling families. Decide the best setting for your family and prepare for an amazing trek through the Central European country.

Getting There

Innsbruck Airport

Perfect for skiers looking for epic mountain landscapes, 16th-century castles, Gothic architecture and modern art, Innsbruck Airport is your hub. Explore Imperial palaces and peruse folk art in the city center, just 2.5 miles from Innsbruck Airport.

Salzburg Airport

For those seeking Mozart’s birthplace, shopping, folklore and endless palace and cathedral tours boasting Baroque architecture, fly into Salzburg Airport. As the second-largest international airport in Austria, Salzburg Airport acts as an easy entry to ski areas and downtown fun.

Vienna International Airport

As both the largest and capital city of Austria, Vienna is a city of art and industry. Located along the Danube River, the city’s history and allure has been visited by Beethoven, Mozart and Sigmund Freud.

Graz Airport

Located in the southern region of Austria, Graz Airport is located near Graz, the second-largest city in Austria. This medieval town is comprised of narrow streets lined by artisan shops and cafés — perfect for a small-town getaway amid an incredible city life straight out of the time of the Renaissance.

Getting Around

Depending on the airport you fly into, there will be buses, trains and taxis available to transport your family to your accommodations or to the downtown area. Some of the best transportation lines include the airport train from Vienna Airport to the city; Graz Central Railway Station into downtown; Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof (Central Train Station); and Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. Of course, you will have various taxis, private cars and rental car options, but the trains are efficient, inexpensive, fast and convenient for families.

Once at your destination, you can get around with the family quite easily. Traversing from city to countryside and back again will be easiest by the Austrian railway system. The journey will be picturesque, timely and a fun experience for the kids.

If you’re looking to stay relatively local, Austrian buses and taxis are quite reliable, but take advantage of the bike culture on nice weather days. You’ll take in the sites and get some exercise along the way.

For those looking to hit the open road and change locations during your stay, rent a car, route your journey and enjoy the incredible vistas. You can plan for a car rental ahead of your trip with an online booking service, grab one while at the airport or consult your hotel concierge. Read up on the rules of the road, gas station information and other important information while planning your trip.

Austria’s diverse landscape and cultural offerings are a must-see for modern traveling families — so pack light and prepare to move around in order to get the most out of the amazing country.
