Travel Tips

Traveling internationally or to a popular tourist destination can open up a world of scams and rip-off experiences. Traveling with the family comes with unavoidable expenses as it is, so avoiding tourist traps can be essential to keeping your trip easy and fun.

Every city has them, both locally and abroad, so try to avoid tourist traps and upcharges with a few helpful tips.

Read Reviews

People will hand you flyers on the street and tell you all sorts of fairytales about amazing local experiences, restaurants, shops and activities, but be sure to do some research of your own. You’ll find something more tailored to the interests of your family or stumble upon something fun and interesting while exploring town.

Before paying high prices for some local attraction or must-see tourist destination, make sure you check online first and see what the fuss is about. If you don’t have WiFi, check in with the locals — specifically those who don’t stand to profit from your ticket purchase.

Plan ahead and check out the top tourist sites in the area. If it really is something you want to see, read about the best times to go. Avoid the crowds and explore at your own pace and enjoy a less-crowded view and hectic experience. If you see the photos online, read the reviews and take in some local information, you might find something more fuss-worthy for your family to enjoy.

Avoid Gift Shops

Definitely bring something home to remember your trip, but just don’t get it from a gift shop. Take your time collecting mementos and don’t feel pressure to get it accomplished in one place — especially a store specifically designed to profit from tourists.

Most items are made in another country and will not stand the test of time. Save your money, take a ton of photos and hold out for a local mom-and-pop shop or street vendor on an off-street that catches your eye.

Wear Your Walking Shoes

While most major cities offer a plethora of affordable and accessible transportation options, we tend to opt for a cab in a pinch. Taxis and hired cars can add up and really take a toll on your vacation budget, so try to walk everywhere you can. You’ll see more of the sights and find new stops along the way to check out.
