Getting the kids interested in the arts, history and different cultures may not be as much as a struggle as it seems. Finding an interesting subject and destination can help, of course, and with so much rich history weaving in and out of the narrow streets of La Candelaria in Bogotá, Colombia, it may be easier accomplished than in other cities.

Whether you are a family of avid travelers, art aficionados, South American culture novices or something in between, the fun, playful and inviting setting of Museo Botero makes it a must-visit.

On my recent trip to Bogotá, Colombia, I nearly opted out of the visit. Strolling past the unassuming museum after a visit to the Candelaria church across the narrow, cobblestone street, I was immediately humbled by his impressive collection of works and personal favorites while strolling through the villa-style museum.

More like a beautiful home filled with incredible works of art, secluded rooms for reflection and an open-air courtyard at the center, Museo Botero is a unique setting for such important artistic pieces. Less stuffy than your average museum and far more inviting for all ages — evident through the several different school tours moving through the open exhibits — even the artwork is a bit more fun.

Enjoying the expertly informed commentary of our guide, I understood Botero’s style a bit more. His subjects are “big-boned” and a fun representation of humanity, with some sneaky details hidden in each. Take a closer look at each piece — even the “family portraits” tell a darker story of betrayal and deceit.

The “Mona Lisa,” one of Botero’s well-known, culturally controversial pieces, receives a lot of criticism. The depiction of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” is a fun, big-boned version, which I personally enjoyed. Even her matching big-boned frame is comically larger than the original.

The easy flow and open layout of the European villa-esque museum allows guests to move around freely, enjoying works by Botero and his peers in his personal collection of Dali, Picasso and many, many more.

Different showrooms display different political themes, from the riots and struggle in Colombia, to all over the world. As heavy as the material may be, the subject is still a fun, big-boned character — all circling around a beautiful fountain and garden center.

The open-air courtyard is a naturally beautiful break from the surrounding pieces of art and sculptures, with the vast Colombian mountain range and Monserrate church in the near distance.

Don’t expect any velvet ropes or over-protective barriers. Keep a safe looking distance, avoid flash-photography and enjoy the Museo Botero’s laid-back luxury feel. It’s easy to feel at ease exploring the museum with all ages while respecting the art and incredible surroundings.
