New England is renowned for its skiing and you definitely don’t have to shy from some of the more popular destinations in order to ensure a good time for the kids. Here’s where to go to guarantee everyone has a great experience, both on and off the slopes.
Okemo is consistently rated a top family ski resort. The lodging options are plentiful, as are the activities for those who aren’t quite into the ski scene. However, if you do have less-talented skiers in your party itching to get out on the slopes, don’t fear — there’s a full range of lesson programming to make sure everyone learns a thing or two about skiing and safety before getting out on the mountain.
While Maine might not be known as much for its great skiing as, say, Vermont or New Hampshire, it certainly should still make your list of potential spots to visit. Sunday River offers two great hotels and there’s a ton to do for non-skiers and parents in charge of looking after the non-skiers. Think outdoor heated pools, zip lining, sledding, shopping and breweries.
Smugglers’ Notch Resort, Vermont
If you’re urging your smallest family members to get out and give the slopes a try, Smugglers’ Notch Resort has you covered with a huge range of family ski and ride lessons. They welcome pupils down to the age of 2. There are additionally ski camps and day cares for those parents who want to trust their kids with someone responsible while they try out some more challenging terrain on their own.
Loon Mountain Resort, New Hampshire
With three separate peaks and modern amenities, Loon Mountain Resort offers several lodging options and lots to do when you’re not on the slopes. The Loon’s Adventure Center is great for kids, with loads to do and fun activities to keep the boredom at bay, while Mom and Dad hit the slopes, grab a drink or just enjoy a little quiet time. The nearby town of Lincoln offers other things to keep kids busy, like a movie theater and shopping.
Jay Peak offers three ski-in, ski-out hotels, ranging in luxury and cost. The Mountain Kids Adventure Center offers programs for new skiers and snowboarders 4 to 12. However, if your children aren’t quite that excited about getting out in the snow, maybe a swim would be more up their alley? Jay Peak offers a 60,000-square-foot indoor waterpark for fun in the sun all year-round, with a surf simulator, lazy river, pools and waterslides.
