One thing your family might not see while traveling through the United States? Ancient castles. But the rest of the world, especially Europe, has this historic, fairytale-like architecture on lock, and below some castles worth traveling for.

More than a staple in otherworldly stories, the world’s fortresses, royal castles and historic strongholds leftover from a bygone era are truly something to behold. These things were made to impress. Here are a few you should add to your must-see list.

The Neuschwanstein Castle

Possibly one of the most famous castles in the world, Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany, is worth all the hype. The location alone is worth the trip, hence the forethought in building such an impressive structure on the stunning hilltop. The castle’s many towers boast panoramic views overlooking the small village of Hohenschwangau. Nestled in the region’s stunning mountainous landscape, this 19th-century castle stands out, without taking away from lush foliage.

Edinburgh Castle

Scotland’s iconic castle fortress, Edinburgh Castle, is impossible to miss along the skyline of the capital city. Take a tour of the city with the family and you’ll feel the towering castle’s presence around nearly every corner. Sitting among the rocky landscape, the locale is known as Castle Rock and as an impressive piece of history and architecture.

Conwy Castle

Located in Conwy, Wales, Conwy Castle comes complete with a suspended bridge on the outside and walled town on the inside. Like a cookie-cutter castle, with all the expected charm and protective details, Conwy keeps up with the castle’s ancient mystique and authentic allure. While the castle dates back to the 1280s, it still boasts seasonal activities, tours and all-ages festivals attracting locals and tourists. Visit with the kids and take a tour, or plan your trip around a specific event — either way, you’ll feel like royal subjects for the day.

Chillon Castle

Sitting on iconic Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle is a diamond in Veytaux, Switzerland’s, landscape. Partially surrounded by water and lush forests, with snow-peaked mountains in the distance, this locale is a true stunner. Just think of the family photos!

Le Mont Saint-Michel

Essentially an island in and of itself, Saint Michael’s Mount is a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. Situated off Normandy’s northwestern coast, this castle’s walled city and iconic architecture attracts more than 3 million visitors each year.
