Elvis Presley may not be at the top of your kids’ playlists, but he is and will forever be an icon of American pop culture. Honoring his 90th birthday with a trip to Memphis, the home of Graceland, is the perfect reason to explore this Tennessee city and find out why the King of Rock ‘N Roll made the city home. The city pulls out all the stops to celebrate his birthday this month (Jan. 8, to be exact), and whether you are a fan of the King or just looking for a reason to visit the city, 2025 has plenty of fun for families.
To commemorate Presley’s life, Graceland (the now museum that was Elvis and his family’s former) has exhibits and activities scheduled throughout the year. For the rest of the year, you can experience the 90 for 90 Exhibit, a collection of 90 artifacts specially selected from the Graceland Archives. In April, Graceland unveils a new exhibit about Presley’s 1973 performance in Hawai’i, along with two more exhibits opening in August, one featuring his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, and another recreating Presley’s iconic movie sets so you and the family can take fun photos. You’ll also be able to book a seven-hour Presley for A Day experience, which includes a special guided tour, horseback ride, private dinner, a look at seldom-seen archived artifacts and an after-hours tour of the mansion without the crowds.
While in town, there are plenty more ways to entertain the family and show them what makes Memphis the perfect place for a family vacation. A visit to National Civil Rights Museum, undergoing an expansion project, is a must so kids can learn about how far we have come as a society to ensure civil rights for all and understand the struggles of those who worked so hard to make change happen. The first phase of the expansion, which involves adjacent Founders Park, will include space for events and community gatherings, expected to be ready this summer.
Feeding the family won’t be a problem with the new BBQ Trail. Designed to showcase the city’s culinary history and its reputation as the BBQ Capital of the World, the trail includes a free pass that lands you great discounts at a variety of dining establishments across town. Simply visit the website to get your pass and see the lengthy list of eateries offering special deals as part of the program, which includes great spots like Central Barbecue, just a short walk from National Civil Rights Museum.
