Destinations / North America

Located outside of downtown Denver, Grand County offers fun and adventure for family travelers on spring break. Whether looking for skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, tubing or sledding, the area consists of five towns that each offer distinct character, scenery and activities.

Grand County is known as the “Snowmobile Capital of Colorado” thanks to its more than 1,000 miles of trails surrounding the five towns, each with its own landscapes, amenities and après offerings. Sign up for a guided tour with the backcountry experts at Grand Adventures in Winter Park or High County Tours in Kremmling. Guests can also rent a high-powered sled from On the Trail Rentals in Grand Lake and explore on their own. New to the area and winter sports? Read about how to prepare with this Beginner’s Guide to Snowmobiling.

The area also boasts some of the best Nordic offerings in Colorado. Guests of Grand Lake Nordic Center, located on the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, can expect peaceful surroundings and regular moose sightings as they glide down the skiing trails. The Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash features trails nestled in the private Ranch Creek Valley at the base of the Continental Divide. The family-friendly YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch has a whopping 5,000 acres to explore on cross-country skis, snowshoes or fat bikes. All Nordic visitors receive complimentary access to the resort’s snow tubing, ice skating and indoor swimming pool.

The whole family is bound to have a blast playing in the snow at one of these unique recreational attractions. Snow tubing brings joy to guests of all ages as you zoom downhill on an inflatable sled at Historic Fraser Tubing Hill or Colorado Adventure Park.

The YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch offers travelers a glimpse into the world of dog sledding. Guests get to meet the sled dog team and hop on board with an experienced musher for a thrilling ride over hills, around curves and through snow-dusted trees.
