See Frozen Waterfalls at Starved Rock State Park

Glistening in colder months, this state park in northwestern Illinois is home to more than a dozen frozen waterfalls (also known as icefalls), as well as snow-dusted canyons and scenic trails along the Illinois River. In winter, you can even spot bald eagles soaring overhead, and for the more experienced and older travelers, try rock climbing some of the icefalls. There’s even a lodge, Starved Rock Lodge, for overnight stays and dinner.

Try Snowtubing at Blackwell Forest Preserve

For one of the most exhilarating winter thrills just outside of Chicago, head to Blackwell Forest Preserve. This spot is an easy, family-friendly place to enjoy the season. Reserve tubing sessions and let the fun begin!

Go Snowshoeing, Skiing at The Morton Arboretum

This arboretum spans more than 1,700 acres and, in winter, transforms into a wonderland for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Wind through tree-lined trails, take in the beauty and discover frozen ponds along the way. After a day of adventure, warm up with a drink and snack at the visitor center.

Tube Down Alpine Hills Adventure Park

Located in Rockford, Alpine Hills is a snow park in winter, featuring a separate tubing and terrain park divided into sections to accommodate riders and snowboarders of all abilities. The Lodge serves drinks and snacks, and a nearby fireplace is there to keep visitors warm.
