Head to Norfolk, Virginia, and Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, for July 4th for a family travel getaway. These Virginia cities offer plenty Fourth of July fun for the whole family.
Norfolk hosts its 39th annual 4th of July Great American Picnic & Fireworks event. The free event takes place at the downtown waterfront, 5–10 p.m., with the fireworks display kicking off at 9:30 p.m. Enjoy live music, food and activities while taking in waterfront views. For a more intimate experience, join the 4th of July Fireworks Signature Dinner Cruise. Set on the Elizabeth River, the cruise includes dinner and drinks, followed by the stunning fireworks display overhead. Board the ship at 6:30 p.m. for the 7–9:30 p.m. cruise. Another cruise option is Norfolk’s 4th of July Fireworks Aboard the Victory Rover. The cruise sets sail at 8:30 p.m. for a brief tour of the inner harbor before the fireworks display begins. Adult admission costs $40.
Colonial Williamsburg hosts a four-part concert series leading up to July 4. Attend the Star-Spangled Symphony on July 1, Virginia Arts Festival Big Band on July 2, A Community Salute to America on July 3, and July 4th on the Lawn on July 4. Kick off July 4th with a reading of the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson at Capitol Circle. The grand fireworks display, Lights of Freedom, begins at 8 p.m. with a variety of musical performances ahead of the fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.
