Destinations / Europe

Portugal is a dream destination for many, but not always the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of family travel. That is quickly changing thanks to the family-friendly approach of the Martinhal family of hotels and resorts, completely reinventing the idea of a family vacation.

Martinhal Sagres in the Algarve is a dream destination for families looking to enjoy some luxury and relaxation while taking in Portugal’s beautiful coastline. Nestled in a protected natural park overlooking Martinhal Beach in the small beach town of Sagres, the property is the brainchild of Martinhal’s founder and CEO, Chitra Stern. The British-Swiss entrepreneur recognized a lack of family-friendly options in Portugal and wanted to create a luxurious property that truly delivers on the family-friendly promise, creating a resort that allows children to have the same experience as their parents.

The resort caters to kids, from babies on up, with special programs and unique offerings covering everything you might want or need from a vacation. While many resorts offer fun options for kids in their restaurants and cafés, the choices are often limited. Martinhal takes this a step further by offering fresh purees for babies and an extensive kids’ menu that goes beyond the classics like mac ‘n cheese and chicken fingers. The resort’s restaurants offer kid-sized portions of the same meals available to their parents, giving kids the chance to try new things (the menus feature a variety of Portuguese, Mediterranean, South American and Asian cuisines) and feel like grown-ups without overwhelming them.

The restaurant also features a Kids’ Corner, where the little ones can play once they finish eating. This lets parents relax while they eat or enjoy a glass of wine without having to worry about the kids having fun.

Martinhal’s Baby Concierge service is there to provide anything parents might need to care for their little ones. Whether you need diapers, potties, safety gates or baby baths, the concierge can provide it during your stay. Whether you’ve forgotten something critical or just don’t have the room to travel with it, the concierge can make sure you have everything you need to take care of your little ones away from home.

Activities designed with the whole family in mind let you enjoy your Portuguese vacation the way you want to. The Kids’ Club, run by specially trained Martinhal staff, provides thoughtful activities to keep the little ones entertained, covering a range of age groups from infants to teens. Parents are free to enjoy leisure time while their little ones are participating in the Kids’ Club, but you can also book a session where activities are organized to include the whole family.

Families find themselves with so much to do at the resort, both for kids and adults, that no one feels left out and everyone can feel like their vacation is curated just for them. Whether it is booking a family spa day, spending the day at the beach or hiking the nearby trails, or renting one of the many types of bicycles available for adults and kids of all ages, a stay at Martinhal Sagres will create great family memories of Portugal.

How Kids Can Learn About Nature on a Fall Hike

A walk through the woods or along the paths of a park provides not only good exercise and family time, but also a good chance for kids to be more observant of the natural world. With a little help from you and maybe from the iNaturalist app, they can become amateur naturalists and develop observation skills that will enrich their travels wherever they go.
