Indianapolis is home to the world’s largest children’s museums, making it one of the best destinations for family travelers looking to provide the perfect mix of fun and education for little ones. Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is home to a wide array of exhibits designed to teach, entertain and challenge young minds through play. While there are always fantastic permanent exhibits to experience at the museum, be sure to check out these great experiences that will make your 2024 visit one to remember.

The popular traveling exhibit, Emotions at Play With Pixar’s Inside Out, is tailored to kids aged 3–8 and designed to help them understand, express and manage emotions. The exhibit, at the museum until May 19, helps kids learn about Joy, Anger, Fear, Disgust and Sadness, the five emotions featured in the popular animated film. Kids get to visit the emotion control panel, use interactive emotion mirrors to learn how their emotions look to others, and use the emotion blocks to learn how emotions work together to create balance in their lives.
While there, your little ones won’t want to miss the museum’s latest opening, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Secrets of the Sewer exhibit. This fun exhibit has been busy touring the country for the past several years. Celebrate the return of the exhibit, home just in time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The museum partnered with the city to paint manholes across town in the turtle’s signature shade of shell-shock green.

The exhibit transports guests to the sewers (minus the dirt and grime) to explore the Dojo, Common Room, Donatello’s Lab and even the streets of New York. Kids not only get to see a real-life version of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Donatello at home in their lair, but they also get to take part in interactive experiences like balancing on skateboards, sliding between laser-like ropes and building a bridge. These activities are specially designed to teach valuable skills like teamwork and problem-solving skills through interactive puzzles, mazes and obstacles courses.
“It’s all about using your knowledge, creativity and teamwork,” said Jennifer Pace Robinson, president and CEO, Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “Just like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles do to overcome obstacles and solve problems.”

Both exhibits are included in the price of a regular museum admission and, while they are designed for younger visitors, they are entertaining for kids of all ages — and yes, that includes adults who are kids at heart!
