If you want to camp for the 2024 solar eclipse, which takes place on April 8, 2024, you have a few options — but some are better than others.
Firstly, you’ll want to camp in the eclipse’s path of totality, where it’s possible to watch the eclipse completely block out the sun. Luckily, quite a few states sit in the path of totality, and the path of totality is rather wide, so you have lots of options. (That said, thousands upon thousands of people will be descending upon the destinations within this path, so you’ll want to book your camping spot as early as possible.)
Campspot offers a handy guide to finding a camping spot within the path of totality but, broadly speaking, you should look to campgrounds and parks located in:
- Southwest, Central and Northeast Texas
- Southeast Oklahoma
- Southwest, Central and Northeast Arkansas
- Southeast Illinois
- Central and Southern Indiana
- Far Western Kentucky
- Western, Central and Northeastern Ohio
- Northwestern Pennsylvania
- Western, Central and Northern New York
- Northern Vermont
- Northern New Hampshire
- Northern Maine
You can look for campgrounds near large cities in the path of totality, such as Austin, Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; or Buffalo, New York, but for fewer crowds, look farther afield, to more rural areas in these states.
