There is never a bad time to visit Berlin, but if you are headed there this spring, you’ll find plenty of proof the season is perfect for family travelers. As the city emerges from winter, the weather is turning beautiful, the sun is coming out and lowers are blooming. Café and restaurant patrons start lining the streets, and those walkways are filled with people strolling in the fresh air and taking in the sights and sounds of Berlin. It’s the perfect time to experience the natural side of a big, metropolitan city.
Berlin will still be a bit chilly in May, according to the standards of some travelers, but for locals, it is the perfect time to head outdoors. In fact, it is a time celebrated by them as the start of swimming season in the city. You and the family can visit one of the many lakes and public outdoor pools, known locally as lidos, found throughout the city to take the plunge and celebrate the beautiful weather. For a great family-friendly spot, head to Berlin’s largest lake, Lake Müggelsee, where you’ll find sandy beaches, a playground and a shallow zone for safe swimming.
Walking tours are another great way to enjoy the great weather and introduce the family to the city’s cultural side. There are some great experiences to choose from, like the Berlin Backyards Tour, which gives you a glimpse into daily life for Berliners. This tour takes you through the hidden backyards tucked away in the heart of this bustling city, while the Street Art Tour gives you a first-hand look at the street art scene of the city, which plays a major role in the city’s cultural heritage.
