While there are about as many museums in Italy as pieces of art, there are more than a few you should add to your must-see list ahead of your next (or first!) trip. Work your way through the country’s rich history in the arts with this list of suggestions. Bringing the kids? Get your mature, artsy brood ready for a walk through ancient Roman history, old-world order and a whole lot of biblical imagery.
Located in the Historic Centre of Florence, right along the Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi Gallery houses must-see masterpieces from Michelangelo, Botticelli, Buontalenti, Simone Martini, Leonardo da Vinci and Raffaello — just to name a few.
While you’re still in the Tuscan region of Florence, as we suspect you will be for awhile, make your way to the Bargello National Museum. Known by many other names, including the Palazzo del Bargello, Palazzo del Popolo and Museo Nazionale del Bargello, the Bargello was once prisoner barracks with tall, looming archways reminiscent of a church. The museum is home to many sculptures, paintings and a network of important buildings, including the Medici Chapels.
Academy of Florence Art Gallery
While not the most alluringly Italian name, the Academy of Florence Art Gallery has one of the best-known pieces in all of Italy: Michelangelo’s “David.” The sculpture is world-renowned and on view along with countless other master works.
Over in Venice, make your way to the Palazzo Ducale, or Doge’s Palace, for incredible Gothic architecture and history. Once inside, you’ll be mesmerized by the blend of bright, optimistic pieces and dark, ominous works — all much different than the next.
Another stop in Venice, the Gallerie dell’Accademia boasts many Italian artists from Paolo Veronese and Gentile Bellini to countless others. Exhibits change regularly to check to see who is on view. Originally created as a school for the arts, the lavish building offers a peek into the complicated work of art buyers, patrons and creativity.
Finally, in Rome, head to the Castel Sant’Angelo located in Parco Adriano. The impressive structure was commissioned as a mausoleum for the emperor and his family, but was later used as a fortress, castle and now museum. The artwork housed inside lives up to the hype of the exterior.
