Travel Tips

National Siblings Day is the perfect excuse to get the kids to spend some time together. There are plenty of activities kids can do with their siblings.

Anyone who is the parent of siblings or who has ever been a sibling can tell you kids don’t always want to spend time with their little brothers and sisters. This doesn’t really become an issue until kids get to middle school and their friends become more important. At any rate, here are some excellent tips for getting the kids to hang out.

For young kids, they probably spend most of their time together anyway, especially if they are not of school age yet.  Pop them down in front of a Disney movie and some toys and you can consider the day celebrated. If you want to do a little extra, consider getting age-appropriate crafts to do together. Read them a story about the importance of family and brothers or sisters to really drive the point home.

If your kids are between 5 and 10 years old, they are probably getting close to the age where older siblings will pull away. This is a great opportunity to get the kids to spend some time together. Take the kids to the park and bring along a flying disc, a soccer ball, baseball, football and a few gloves for a fun afternoon of activity and bonding. At this age, the younger kids will just be happy to spend time with their big brother or sister, while the older one is probably still young enough to enjoy the interaction as well.

If your kids don’t like sports, the outside is still an excellent place to make memories. Go on a mild hike to see some new scenery without putting the kids through a rigorous workout. If you don’t have any nearby or accessible hiking trails, a simple walk or family bike ride is another nice way to spend some time.

When the kids get a bit older, it can be tough to get them to spend time together. My advice for parents whose children are at different stages in their lives is to let them drift apart. There will come a time when they are happy to reconnect. Forcing big brother to take little sister to a hangout could really leave heads rolling and make everyone miserable.
