Cruising

Considering a family cruise or getaway with your partner? For sustainably minded travelers, the cruising industry, along with other forward thinkers in the travel market, have boosted sustainability efforts. With companies such as MCS Cruises going carbon neutral and others seeking more tangible and assertive eco-friendly efforts, cruise lines get more competitive in a green way.

One such cruise line, Miami-based Australis, is the only commercial cruise through Patagonia, and an extremely conscious one at that. See the great wild landscape along with immersive experiences and active adventures, all with luxury touches and eco-friendly everything. Get out on the water and view wildlife in its natural habitat or get to higher ground and take in some stunning landscape vistas during a hike. Use all the activities and amenities Australis has to offer without worrying about your carbon footprint — this sustainably minded cruise line has you covered.

With a focus on reducing its environmental impact, Australis offers a boutique cruise with limited guests — which benefits passengers and the environment. Guests enjoy unencumbered luxury, high-end accommodations and a slew of healthy environmental tactics. Guests also enjoy green cabin amenities, including biodegradable soaps and shampoos. The cruise line launched AustralisNet, a guest portal showcasing the vessel’s daily programs, activities and more without wasting any paper.

Australis uses MGO, one of the least sulfur-containing marine diesels in the world. Also a standard for Australis, all solid waste is separated, compacted and disposed of at both ports and each vessel also uses proper water treatment onboard, meaning water goes through a treatment process to be cleaned and recycled back to the ocean.

What is typically out of sight, out of mind for passengers is a full-time job for Australis staff. The constant environmental care shown in the day-to-day actions add up in a big way and allow travelers to explore a delicate part of the world safely and thoughtfully.

Becoming a standard across the travel industry, Australis eliminated all plastic water bottles onboard and provides reusable canteens for guests and watering stations throughout the ship.

The green efforts don’t just live on the boat, they extend to land as well. During excursions and while docking, passengers clean their shoes with solvent to remove any possible bacteria to new environments when disembarking the ship. Once on land, guests adhere to strict rules about interacting with the environment and only walk through specific paths to reduce touristic impact.

When traveling anywhere, especially a destination with a delicate and often threatened eco-system, it’s increasingly important to monitor and reduce human impact — which Australis makes easy for travelers and adventurous family cruisers.
