Celebrating International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month as a family is a great and easy excuse to get a group of loved ones together while sprinkling in a little education for the kids. Whether on a budget this month or just looking to celebrate in a low-key way, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the day and month without going all out.
Here are a few ways to celebrate and honor the ladies in your life and throughout history:
Stay In …
Host a movie night, showcasing strong females in the film industry or throughout history. Watch powerful documentaries about your favorite ladies in comedy, show business, sports and more and get the girls together for a fun night in. Prepare a movie or TV show lineup showcasing strong female leads, directors and more to broaden kids’ horizons.
Read a new novel or fun book series with a mini book club. Whether starting up your own women’s lib group to educate the younger girls in your family or just looking for a new read to dive into on your own time, having a great book about or by a female writer is an easy way to observe the month your own way. Get together with friends and family reading the same work and compare and contrast ideas in a fun setting — whether a wine night or a coffee shop.
Go Out …
Hit the town visiting female-centric art exhibits and history museums. This month, you may find more than a few showcasing powerful women in arts and culture. See what’s popping up in a city near you and make a day of it, exploring the sights and sneaking a little history lesson in here and there when you can with the kids.
Visit a female-owned boutique, restaurant, bar — you name it. Support female entrepreneurs, chefs and artists in your area by being a patron and spreading the word. Make it a point to visit primarily female-run restaurants while dining out with the family or making similar, easy moves to support female-founded business in your area. This make take a little research, but it’s a great way to treat yourself and family while supporting women in business.
Whatever way you decide to spend the month, by going big with a fun gathering or going low key with a day here and there paying special attention to iconic women in history, there’s no wrong way to observe International Women’s Day, or Women’s History Month.
