Even if you have picky eaters in your family, you won’t be at a loss for great dining in Mexico City. The city boasts a rich culinary culture and history far beyond tacos and rice and beans (in fact, you’ll probably be hard pressed to find rice and beans in most places, as that’s more of an American-Mexican dish than traditional to the country).

Try these four restaurants for a range of dishes to suit every traveler in your crew:

Terraza Umbral Restaurant Bar

Located within the Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton property, Terraza Umbral Restaurant Bar is the hotel’s rooftop restaurant that’s gained a local following. Enjoy views of the city and mountains beyond in a relaxed atmosphere, with plenty of seating for large families among the couches and tables scattered across the open-air space. Find traditional Mexican fare with an update, such as duck confit tacos — picky eaters can enjoy staples such as fries. An extensive bar menu offers cocktails of every kind.

Restaurante El Cardenal

This classic Mexican eatery is constantly voted one of the best breakfast restaurants in the city. If you don’t have a reservation for your morning meal, you may be left waiting, but the wait won’t be more than 20–30 minutes on most days. Take the elevator up from the entry to one of the small, traditionally decorated rooms overlooking the city streets. Portions are extremely generous and breakfast is accompanied by rich hot chocolate, coffee and traditional pastries.

La Opera

Another longstanding restaurant in Mexico City, La Opera boasts a long history of serving politicians and famous faces. Despite this, you won’t find the atmosphere stuffy or the menu prices too extravagant. The menu is filled with a mix of international and Mexican cuisine, making it a good choice if you have diners among your crew who aren’t particularly adventurous.

Testal

Located adjacent to Mexico City’s Chinatown, Testal is a good spot to visit for a modern, Instagram-worthy dining room, alongside elegantly plated dishes. The menu offers traditional Mexican fare paired with a nice menu of Mexican beers. Grab a table by the window to people watch and, after your meal, check out the many unique souvenir stores in and around Chinatown.
