Travel Tips

‘Tis giving season! Yes, it’s barely December, but even the holiday-averse might agree we need a little cheer and goodwill this month. If there’s one lesson this year taught us, it is to work with less and appreciate more.

For me, this means looking at what I have (most went untouched this year) and filling up bags to donate around my area. Between my exorbitant number of winter jackets and cold-weather accessories; pet food, accessories, beds and blankets my spoiled girl “grew” out of; canned goods I bought for a Friendsgiving that’s no longer happening; and unopened travel-sized toiletries I don’t need, I have a lot to give.

For families looking to create more space for the holidays, use this month as a way to kickstart a holiday tradition of giving. Give the kids a bag or box and take them on a tour around the house, filling up their vessels with donation items. This way, kids feel involved and learn a bit about the process for when they are older and can choose their own gives and keeps.

Don’t forget to check with local Facebook groups first, as you may have some like-new toys, unopened baby gifts or gently worn accessories someone in your area could use. Feel free to post questions to Facebook groups (or create one) in your area as well, as many members may be organizing drives and need your donations.

For those also in the giving (and downsizing) spirit, check out these quick links for donation locations near you:

If these donation locations are a bit out of your way, research charities in your area and see what they are accepting, most in need of and where you can donate — you may be shocked how many you find.

If you have even more to spare, Good Housekeeping has a list of charities in need. Happy giving!
