Review: The Hamilton Hotel

The Hamilton Hotel, located steps away from the White House, was the perfect place for a relaxing weekend getaway. Upon arrival, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful with a quick check-in process. The lobby was immaculate with shining marble flooring, velvet couches and an arched ceiling design that brought a sense of sophistication. For added security, the elevators are only accessible to those who have a key card to a guestroom.

We made our way to the 12thfloor to the VEEP Suite. The large room was filled with photos from the nine-time Emmy Award-nominated hit HBO show, VEEP, which takes place in Washington, D.C., and takes a comedic look at how difficult running the country is as Vice President.

Along with the beautiful décor, the room overlooked Franklin Square Park. Typically, there would be a view of the lush park and tons of greenery, but it is currently under construction. I did not hear any of the construction taking place, though, thanks to the thick windows that block most city noise out. The room had a separate living room with a large, comfortable couch, two velvet chairs, a large television and desk with plenty of outlets to plug in your devices. Down the black-and-white, diamond-patterned hallway is a large bathroom with a tub, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion, along with robes, slippers and hair dryer.

A couple steps down another hall leads to the bedroom. The king-sized bed was comfortable, soft and plush with tons of fluffy pillows. The bedroom is situated on the inner part of the building so the view was not the same as the living room, but, nonetheless, kept out all loud city noises for a great night’s sleep.

Since we visited for the Cherry Blossom Festival, the hotel had a special package with a picnic basket, blanket, bottle of Champagne and charcuterie to take to any nearby park to enjoy the flowers. Unfortunately, we did not get to enjoy this outside as the weather was rainy, but we relaxed on the living room couch and took in the view from our window while munching on cheese and sipping the Champagne.

In the morning, we ordered room service for breakfast to avoid the damp weather. I opted for two eggs over medium with toast and potatoes, while my boyfriend dove into fluffy pancakes with blueberries and candied nuts. Both were delicious and arrived to our door quickly after ordering.

Checking out on Saturday morning, we were able to check our bags at the front desk so we could explore the city for a couple more hours before heading home. The friendly staff placed our bags in a back room and we were on our way. When we returned, we were given a coupon for parking to bring down the price of the local garage to only $20 instead of $70.

I am looking forward to returning to The Hamilton Hotel when the museums open again. The location is perfect for walking to all of the historic locations, museums, restaurants and National Mall.

The Creepy Appeal of Dark Tourism

While the term dark tourism applies more widely to places associated with tragedies, death and the grimmer moments in history, at its heart is a fascination with the bizarre, mysterious and spooky — qualities certain to attract older kids and teens. While sites of mass tragedy may not be suitable, you can enliven family travel with stops at some creepy places.
