The Talbot Islands comprise a series of state parks and wildlife preserves in North Florida along the Atlantic Ocean and lies just a few miles from the Georgian border. The secluded nature and pristine beaches make it a family traveler’s haven. Here are five reasons to visit Talbot Islands:
1.Quiet Beaches
Unlike the neighboring beaches of Jacksonville, the beaches on the Talbot Islands are less crowded, providing families with more space to play and enjoy the sunshine. Bring an umbrella, some chairs and towels, and relax in the sand. The beaches don’t have lifeguards, so make sure your children are watched at all times in the water.

Some of the shoreline on the islands feature strange, alien-looking formations. Only when you get closer do you realized these are trees bleached white from the sun. Over the years, oak trees drifted by the water, getting stuck in the sand and remaining there ever since. This unique phenomenon is great for kids to explore and is a photographer’s dream.
3. Kayaking
Kayak Amelia rents kayaks by the half or full day for visitors to explore Simpson’s Creek, hugging the shoreline of Big Talbot Island and the sand bluffs of Halfmoon bay. The southern route brings kayakers to Fort George Island, Ribault Clubhouse and Kingsley Plantation. You can also kayak along Myrtle Creek or some of the other waters around Little Talbot, part of the National Park Service’s Timucuan Historic and Ecological Preserve.
This 4-mile trail brings hikers along the north end of an untouched barrier island on Little Talbot Island. From sand paths to a couple of miles through maritime forest and ancient dune ridges, this trail highlights much of North Florida’s local flora and fauna. Look for oaks dripping with Spanish moss and magnolia, palmetto, cedar, holly and spicy bay trees throughout your trek.
5. Serene Camping
The state park’s 36 campsites offer 20- and 30-amp electricity, fresh water, fire rings and picnic tables. The campground also includes a laundry facility and two bathhouses, both ADA accessible with hot showers. Children can enjoy the campground’s playground and families can gather at the campfire circle. Find Junior Ranger activity booklets at the ranger station for kids to earn badges and pins and complete activities during their stay.
