In winter, San Antonio transforms into a family traveler’s paradise, with an array of festive events, activities and sights awaiting all who come to this Texas town. Here are seven things to look forward to this holiday season in the city:

1.Black History Holiday Lights River Boat Tour

On Dec. 10, 4:30–6:30 p.m., passengers can float along the San Antonio River Walk on a boat tour hosted by the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum. The tour brings guests on a thought-provoking journey through time, educating passengers on the impact African Americans had on the core of the city.

 

2. Zoo Lights

Head to San Antonio Zoo for Zoo Lights, Nov. 19–Jan. 1. The event features dazzling lights, holiday snacks, larger-than-life displays and photo opportunities scattered across the park. Some of the zoo’s new displays include 32-foot LED Light Trees, a 124-foot light tunnel and the Holiday Sing-Along Express.

3. Menorah-Lighting Ceremony

Celebrate Hannukah at SeaWorld on Dec. 19 at Bay of Play. While there, witness the largest light display in Texas, as well as enjoying festive foods, hot chocolate and carolers.

 

4. Lights at The Alamo

This historic building celebrates the holidays with new light installations, Nov. 25–Jan. 2. Other fun events during these dates include historic reenactments of notable figures like Davy Crockett and Juan Seguin on horseback. On Nov. 25, Dec. 10 and Dec. 17, guests can enjoy live performances, presentations from local artists and holiday food and drinks.

5. La Tamalada

Now in its 15th year, La Tamalada returns, allowing participants to learn about the history of tamales. The event also includes tamale-making workshops led by Chef Overton Lesley from The Witte Museum’s Tremblay Family Café. Purchase tickets to this workshop here.

 

6. Lightscape at The San Antonio Botanical Gardens

The city’s botanical gardens erupt into more than 1 million sparkling lights, casting a glow over the area. Holiday music accompanies the lights for an immersive experience. Visitors can enjoy the lightscape most nights through Jan. 8.

7. River Parade

The 41st annual River Parade begins Nov. 25, featuring a 4-mile route along the River Walk. This year’s theme, Tastes and Traditions Around the World, includes 28 floats adorned with many lights. This year’s Grand Marshal, the Grinch, leads the parade.
