When you first see the Italian island of Capri, a precipitous chunk of rock rising abruptly from the sea, you might wonder why anyone would have settled there. Once you step off the ferry from Naples or Sorrento, though, you’ll know the answer. There are few more beautiful and romantic places in the world and, once you arrive, you’ll be glad you limited these family travels to your one and only.
Marina Piccola
You probably won’t have this lovely little harbor under the cliffs on the south coast to yourselves, but there’s a reason it’s so popular. The water on its sandy beach is often warm enough for swimming, even in the winter. Just offshore are the dramatic Faraglioni sea stacks.
Villa San Michele
If you could choose the perfect setting for a villa, it would be here, high on a clifftop overlooking the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea through vine-draped arbors and tropical flowers. Priceless marble statues and other Roman antiquities decorate the gardens and the villa, all adding to the romantic charm of Villa San Michele.
Gardens of Augustus
Roman dignitaries escaped to the cooling breezes of Capri in the summer; Roman Emperors Augustus and later Tiberius built villas here, surrounded by gardens. You can stroll in the beautifully maintained botanical gardens set atop a terrace. Views down onto the Faraglioni sea stacks and blue-green sea are framed by pergolas and leafy vines. You can follow a winding path down to Marina Picola, located almost directly below.
The Blue Grotto and Green Grotto
When the sunlight reflects inside the huge sea cave, the Blue Grotto seems to be lit from within by an intense blue luminescence. When the sea is calm enough, you can take a boat from the Marina Grande to go inside the cave. While the Blue Grotto is famous and on every tourist’s to-do list, the Green Grotto on the opposite side of the island is far more romantic and far less crowded. Make a visit there part of a private small-boat cruise around the island.
