With summer vacation season on the horizon, the Greek island of Crete is undoubtedly on the radar for many family travelers. As a hotbed of culture, history, mythology and outdoor adventure, travelers flock to this beautiful destination year after year. But as the largest island in Greece, it can be hard to narrow down the best places to eat, stay and play on the island.
Where to Eat
Peskesi, in the capital city of Heraklion, offers a great example of modern flair mixed with old-world tradition. Serving traditional Cretan cuisine in a restored historical mansion, Peskesi is a great introduction to both Cretan food and culture.

Crete offers a seemingly endless list of fun things to do with families to pique all types of interests and personalities. The Palace of Knossos and Heraklion Archaeological Museum are great places to take kids to teach them about Cretan culture and ancient civilizations, while CretAquarium and Aquaworld Aquarium and Reptile Rescue Center are great ways to discover reptilian and aquatic locals. If your family is looking to enjoy the beautiful island weather and beaches, head to Elafonissi to spend a day on the pink and white sand. The waters are shallow and calm, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The beach is also well-organized, with chairs and umbrellas, snack bars and a lifeguard. You have to wade through shallow water to reach the beach itself, which makes for a fun family adventure.
