Destinations / North America

With nearly 85 percent of Americans planning summer vacations in 2023, WalletHub released a report on 2023’s Best Summer Travel Destinations. To help travelers plan the perfect summer getaway, WalletHub compared 100 popular destinations among 41 key indicators of budget- and fun-friendliness. The data set ranges from the cost of the cheapest flight to the number of attractions to the average price of a meal for two people.

The top 10 travel destinations are:

  1. Atlanta, Georgia
  2. Honolulu, Hawai’i
  3. Washington, D.C.
  4. Wichita, Kansas
  5. New York City, New York
  6. Chicago, Illinois
  7. Tampa, Florida
  8. Orlando, Florida
  9. Richmond, Virginia
  10. Springfield, Missouri

Some highlights from the study include:

The average flight to a popular summer destination costs about $413 and lasts about four hours and 13 minutes with about 0.4 connections.

The Los Angeles metro area is the most attractive destination on the West Coast, while Washington, D.C., is the most attractive on the East Coast.

Florida and Texas are home to the most popular top summer destinations, with at least two metro areas in the top 15 each. On the other hand, California has the largest number of unpopular summer destinations with at least two areas.

Houston has the lowest nightly rate for a 3-star hotel room at $28 per night, 9.1 times less expensive than in Portland, Oregon, the highest at $254.
