Travel Tips

With winter in full swing, many family travelers might hit the road in less-than-optimal conditions. Response service company Global Rescue offers suggestions if driving in inclement weather is unavoidable.

Follow these tips for staying safe on the road during a blizzard.

Be Prepared

Thankfully, blizzards are fairly predictable. Check the forecast ahead of your travels so you know when bad weather is coming. Make sure you have a full tank of gas. Driving times will be longer, so you don’t want to run out of gas during a storm. Top off your antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid, too, as you’re likely to use these more in a storm. Pack an emergency kit in your car with supplies including warm clothing, waterproof gloves or mittens, hand and/or feet warmers, a sleeping bag, a small shovel and non-perishable food.

Know Your Car

Is your vehicle all-wheel-drive (AWD), four-wheel-drive (4WD), front-wheel-drive (FWD) or rear-wheel drive (RWD)? Each system handles snowy conditions differently, so make sure you are aware which system your vehicle has and prepare accordingly.

Slow Down

Despite taking every precaution, one of the best things a driver can do during a blizzard is slow down. Turning the wheel and braking will take longer in the snow, so take it slow until you safely reach your destination.
