Tokyo is a fascinating city that draws visitors for many reasons. Some go for the city’s exceptional cuisine, some look to experience a city teeming with technical innovations, while others go to discover Japan’s fascinating culture. But one theme seems to be constant no matter what your reason for visiting the city; it is a great place for family travelers, with plenty to see and do.

One must-see for everyone visiting the city is Tokyo Skytree, a structure that doubles as a broadcasting station and observation tower. At 634 meters, it is not just the tallest building in Japan, it also holds the record as the tallest radio tower in the world. Skytree towers over the city and gives you a bird’s-eye view of the massive city below. Not only do kids love experiencing the incredible view, but there is also plenty of opportunities to put a smile on their faces on the levels below the observation deck. Several floors are devoted to shopping and food, with more than 300 shops selling everything from chopsticks to cheesecakes. Tokyo Skytree is one of the best places in town to buy souvenirs and try a wide variety of Japanese foods and beverages in one place. While there is definitely something for everyone, the kids will especially love shops like the Pokémon shop.

Tokyo has long been associated with animation, and Ghibli Museum in the city’s Mitaka district is a great way to learn about it. Showcasing the work of Studio Ghibli, a pioneer in Japan’s animation industry, this charming museum was designed by legendary animation artist Hayao Miyazaki. Not only can you explore the history of animation, but you can also take in a short, family-friendly animated film in Saturn Theater, a small theater where the ceiling is colorfully decorated to mimic the sky. Tickets for this museum must be booked in advance and, although the schedule varies slightly from month to month, it is open every day but Tuesday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

It won’t take long to realize cats are a big deal in Tokyo. Everywhere you look you will see a maneki neko, a sculpted cat with a beckoning arm believed to bring good luck. When you and the kids are ready for a bite to eat, head to Café Nekoemon in the Yanesen district, where you and the family will learn to love these little figurines. This spot is a combination café and workshop where you can decorate your own maneki neko while enjoying some cat-themed beverages and sweets.
