Asia

Located in India’s West Bengal state, Kolkata boasts colonial architecture, cultural festivals and the Sundarbans — a coastal region and World Heritage site. Bringing the whole family, escaping with friends, couples or traveling solo, Kolkata is a budget-friendly destination.

With an abundance of natural beauty, wildlife to explore and lush scenery, check out nature tours and speak to the locals for an outdoorsy adventure. Begin with the water marsh region of Sundarban National Forest Bangladesh, home to Bay of Bengal, Bengal Tigers and cast forests.

Once an Indian trading post, Kolkata boasts colonial architecture, museums, temples and is even home to the Missionaries of Charity — altruistic headquarters founded by Mother Teresa and the site of her tomb. Bring the kids and pay your respects while taking in the stories of her time there.

For 5 rupees, or 1 cent, pay a visit to The Victoria Memorial. The stunning marble building hosts artifacts and impeccable garden grounds. Memorializing the late, great Queen Elizabeth, this museum is a unique stop in India and incredible bargain.

Pack a lunch or bring something from your hotel and freely visit the 2,300-foot long Howrah Bridge, built in the early 1940s. Extended over the Hooghly River, the bridge provides famous views and bright lights at night.

Keep the outdoor sightseeing going with a trip to New Town Eco Park. This recreational park offers boat rides on the lake, gardens, bike paths and a playground for kids. Take in the views and enjoy the cooling weather at night.

Spending the day out and about, walking, taking tours and shopping in town can get quite hot and tiring. Cool off at the waterpark and resort Aquatica for about $22 a day, or stick to the arts with a tour through Indian Museum, Kolkata for a low price. Established in the early 1800s, the museum showcases endless artifacts and Indian Buddhist Art.

Make a point to visit Dakshineswar Kali Temple, an epic sight to see in person. The temple boasts three floors to explore, gardens and impressive architecture — hello photo opportunity.

With a full day of exploring the town, surrounding sites and enjoying local history and culture for free, or nearly free, head back into town for nightly activities. Enjoy the scenic cityscape, varied dining options, late-night shops and exploring without much concern for budget.
