Known as America’s most dog-friendly city, San Francisco rolls out the red carpet for four-legged traveling companions. National Pet Week, May 4–10, is a good time to take these important members of your family for a stay in Golden Gate City.

For a convenient downtown location, stay at Axiom Hotel, on Union Square near the famous Powell Street Cable Car turnaround. Up to three pets are welcome in any size room, with pet beds, water bowls and pet treats provided.

Near Union Square, dog-friendly rooms on a dedicated floor at Hotel Nikko are equipped with snuggly beds and room service for both you and your pet. An outdoor pet terrace with a daily dog run keeps pets active. Ask about the Pet Pride package, too.

Not far away, in the heart of the Theater District, boutique Hotel Emblem extends a welcome with dog beds, plush toys and a dog-walking service. Pamper yourself and your pet with a picnic basket of treats for both of you.

In lively Fisherman’s Wharf, any number of pets are welcome — dogs, cats or feathered friends — at Kimpton Alton Fisherman’s Wharf, with rooms on a dedicated floor. Pets are always welcome at nightly wine and beer receptions.

San Francisco’s many parks offer plenty of place for dog walks, but the favorite is Fort Funston, an off-leash paradise for dogs. You’ll be rewarded with views of sea cliffs and Golden Gate Bridge while Rover romps in the grass.
