Florida’s beaches draw visitors not only from across the country but also from across the world; however, Florida also boasts several freshwater springs for family travelers looking for crystal-clear and cooler waters. Here are some of Florida’s best springs:
Located just more than 10 miles from Tallahassee, Wakulla Springs Park comprises the springs as well as 9 miles of hiking trails. While it may be too hot to walk many miles in the Florida summer, enjoy a short hike before dipping into the cold waters of the spring. The springs include a gradual sandy slope for easy access as well as a platform for the more adventurous to climb and jump from. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a manatee floating by!
Ginnie Springs lies about 45 minutes from Gainesville and connects to the Santa Fe River. The springs boast clear, cold waters and accessible caves with a limestone and sand bottom. Privately owned, Ginnie Springs invites visitors to swim, snorkel, canoe, kayak, stand-up paddleboard and even tube along the river. Along the river, various springs await visitors wanting to go for a swim. Interestingly enough, the springs located along the river are sources for bottled spring water.
Sitting south of Lake City in North Florida, Ichetucknee Springs features a bright blue river with a gentle stream, in which guests can float under a canopy of cypress, maple, oak and pine leaves and branches. Go tubing, kayaking, paddleboarding and canoeing in these springs and down the 6 miles of river. The park also includes a recreation area.
Images of this place appear on almost every travel Pinterest board and travel influencers’ social media pages, but it’s not just available for the few. Situated in a prehistoric cave in Williston, Devil’s Den is a refreshing 72 degrees year-round and reaches an astounding depth of 54 feet. The springs are privately owned and require an admission fee, but the ethereal nature of the cave and water is totally worth it.
