Spend more than a few hours in Wisconsin and you likely discover the state is a beautiful patchwork of farmland with gently rolling pastures, fields of crops and all varieties of livestock. For inquisitive family travelers who never experienced life on a farm themselves, a farm stay vacation offers a unique way to explore this beautiful state and learn a little about living on a working farm. With more than 64,000 farms in the state of Wisconsin, producing everything from meat and dairy to honey and cranberries, many visitors experience a natural curiosity about farm life.
Working farms like Rainbow Ridge Farms, located in Onalaska (just a short drive north of La Crosse), give families an incredible opportunity to enjoy a vacation combining the discovery of farm life with the beauty and adventure that makes Wisconsin such an ideal family vacation destination.
Rainbow Ridge offers a quaint bed and breakfast in an 1860s farmhouse, with accommodations year-round on a hobby farm that raises goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys and pigs. Guests are welcome to interact with the animals and learn about what goes into caring for them and the farm, from feeding the animals, tending the garden, collecting the eggs for breakfast and even being present when the farm babies are born.
In addition to farm duties, guests can enjoy on-site goat yoga with some of the farm’s most playful residents. The surrounding area also offers plenty of incredible activities for the family, like biking and hiking in the summer and skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, as well as attractions like a visit to the nearby Amish community, local breweries and wineries and the nearby Children’s Museum of La Crosse.
Rates run from $105 per night for one room or $190 for a family package with two rooms and breakfast included for each guest.
