With fall in full swing, it’s hard to miss the beauty of the season. As Mother Nature paints the landscape with dazzling reds, deep oranges and vibrant yellows, it’s no wonder family travelers head to places like Vermont, where fall colors are abundant, to take scenic drives showcasing the season.
While the state’s famous fall foliage can be seen throughout the state, Mad River Valley, deep in the heart of the Green Mountains, draws visitors year after year for scenic drives taking you through some of the most beautiful countryside in America. For a tried-and-true route to see Mother Nature in all her glory, plan a route along Mad River Scenic Byway, a scenic road that loops through the valley and is a favorite starting point for many leaf-peepers.
This 30-mile route offers many side turnoffs from the main byway, giving you the chance to see a little bit of everything, from dense forest and streaming waterfalls to the picturesque covered bridges Vermont is so well known for. Quaint bed and breakfasts and historic villages offer great accommodations, food and fun shopping. In essence, there is plenty to do along the way, allowing you and your family to take your time and enjoy the ride.
The route features plenty of photo ops, as well as lots of spots to stop and stretch your legs with a scenic hike or enjoy a picnic in the fresh air. You can even introduce the little ones to berry picking on one of the farms dotting the countryside. With so much to do and so much to see, you will wish the fall colors could last all year long.
