Across the international border from Maine, the Canadian province of New Brunswick is a prime summer vacation spot for families. The vast Bay of Fundy borders on the east, where the world’s highest tides carve cliffs into fantastic shapes and attract 12 species of whales, dolphins, porpoises and other sea life.
Begin a trip in St. Andrews, a historic town close to the border (you can see Maine across the water), a good port for whale-watching cruises. Island Quest Marine Whale and Wildlife Cruises are accompanied by nature guides who can answer questions and assure the best sightings. For thrills, book a zodiac ride with Fundy Tide Runners.
Farther north, Fundy National Park protects a dramatic coastline of cliffs and caves carved by the powerful Bay of Fundy tides. Five campgrounds are handy to the main attractions. Families can choose tent and RV sites or yurts and rustic cabins.
At Hopewell Rocks, where giant eroded cliffs and free-standing rock pillars tower over a beach, you can walk on the ocean floor at low tide. Return when the tide has risen and the rocks become tree-topped islands. Park rangers can answer questions and explain how these sculptured pillars continue to form as the tides wear away the softer cliffs around them. At high tide, join a kayak tour with Baymount Outdoor Adventures to paddle among the stone pillars.
The coast around Shediac (claiming the title Lobster Capital of the World) is known for the warmest saltwater beaches north of Virginia. Kids will want to climb on the giant lobster sculpture for pictures. Rent paddleboards and kayaks at nearby beaches.
Farther along this Acadian Coast, Kouchibouguac National Park campgrounds are a good base for more warm-water beach activities, as well as exploring the forests, salt marshes and dunes. You can kayak in the lagoons or rent a Voyageur Canoe to paddle through park waters to see a colony of grey seals.
