Le Conquet: France’s Secret Beach Town

At the far western edge of mainland France, the active fishing port of Le Conquet stands in layers of stone buildings rising from the harbor. Houses from the 16^th and 17^th centuries line the seawall in a tight-packed row, the colorful shutters brightening the stone facades. For travelers, Le Conquet is more than just a picturesque Breton town; it’s a good base for a family beach holiday.

The beaches begin close to the town center with Plage de Portez and Plage de Pors Liogan, or families can head toward Kermorvan to find beautiful Plage des Blancs-Sablons, the area’s largest sandy beach at more than one mile long. Kermorvan Peninsula, opposite Le Conquet, is worth exploring to see its dramatic coast and iconic lighthouse. Walking paths encircle the peninsula, which overlooks Le Conquet across the narrow bay.

You can reach Kermorvan Peninsula on foot by crossing Passerelle du Croaë footbridge, also a good vantage point for views of Le Conquet’s harbor and the stone town rising above it.

Heading south from Le Conquet, you’ll find more beaches and Pointe Saint-Mathieu, where there’s a lighthouse towering more than 100 feet above a dramatic rocky point. Beside it is a ruined abbey. For views of this craggy coast and lighthouse from the sea, and to explore Parc Naturel Marin d’Iroise, take the daily boat from Le Conquet’s port to visit the offshore islands of Ouessant, Sein and Molène.

Plan to spend some time in the town itself, a cluster of stone buildings including two fortified mansions from the 15^th century, one with a round tower. For a little history, follow the information panels along the Heritage Interpretation route, including Church of Saint-Croix and small stone Chapel of Dom Michel. See if kids can guess why these churches have open arches in their bell towers. (These arches are common in Brittany churches, so wind can blow through without damaging the tower.)

No beach vacation is complete without some shopping, and Le Conquet is the place to find a good selection of the fine crafts for which Brittany is known. In the buildings lining Rue Poncelin, you’ll find shops and galleries featuring handcrafted jewelry, such as Fileur de Verre, and Naturel Déco for leather goods and other high-quality, hand-made gifts. Look here, too, for local food specialties.

In venerable stone buildings on the same street are La Grange, filled with antiques and vintage items, and a creperie with sidewalk tables and a terrace. When choosing from menus in Le Conquet, remember fresh-caught crab is the town’s culinary specialty.
