North America

Explore the great state of Pennsylvania on your next family trip with this suggested three-day itinerary.

Day One

Begin your road trip in the Hershey/Harrisburg region and learn about the state’s influence on U.S. history. Start on a sweet note at The Hershey Story Museum. This interactive museum covers the legacy of chocolatier Milton Hershey through hands-on experiences and chocolate tastings. Next, embark on a guided tour at Indian Echo Caverns, a limestone cave system with still-growing formations. End the day with a visit to National Civil War Museum and learn about this difficult time in America’s history. Book a stay at Homewood Suites by Hilton Harrisburg or Best Western Premier The Central Hotel & Conference Center.

Day Two

The history lesson continues on day two with a full day exploring Gettysburg. Check out Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center for a comprehensive lesson on the American Civil War told through immersive exhibits. Explore Gettysburg National Military Park by foot or by car, stopping at key landmarks and battlefield sites. Family-friendly accommodations include 1863 Inn at Gettysburg, Best Western Gettysburg, and Wyndham Gettysburg Hotel & Conference Center.

Day Three

Move on to Altoona and Lancaster on day three. Begin the day at three-track railroad curve Horseshoe Curve, a National Historic Landmark and engineering marvel. Learn more about the region’s influence on railroads at Railroaders Memorial Museum. Finally, stop at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum. This 100-acre living history museum focuses on the history of Pennsylvania Germans in Lancaster. Spend your final road trip night at Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Altoona or Holiday Inn Express & Suites Altoona.
