Age Specific / Kids

Winter travel can be a challenge for adults. What do you when the kids are in tow as well? Follow these tips to be sure your winter travel is more than just runny noses, lost mittens and delayed flights.

Take It All

Even if you’re traveling to a destination with historically mild temperatures in the winter, forecasts can change on a dime. Make sure you bring along extra winter clothing your kids might need in case of a freak snowstorm. While it might mean a little extra baggage, if you need it, you’ll be glad you packed it.

Safety First

If you’re traveling by car, make sure you put safety first. Is your car’s emergency kit stocked and up to date? Do you have ice brushes and scrapers in the trunk? What about flashlights and flares? Pack along some extra windshield washer fluid and a small shovel as well, so you’re prepared for any kind of snowy, icy weather you might come up against.

A Back-Up Plan

Winter weather may mean delays, regardless of your form of transportation. Have a back-up plan for what your family will do in the case of a longer delay that may take several hours or days. In the event of small delays, keep in mind ways you may be able to keep the kiddos occupied and boredom-free. For longer delays, know what kind of travel protection you have, so you can make the necessary adjustments.

Stock Up on Winter Essentials

If you’re a frequent traveler, you likely have a go-to list in your head of things to pack for each trip. However, you might want to add some additional items to your list when you travel during the winter. Things like extra tissues, hand sanitizers, cold and flu medicine and even Chapstick can be a big help and come in handy when you’re on the go during the winter months.

Frequent Breaks

Winter travel can be a little bit more stressful due to the weather and high number of people traveling. When parents are stressed, kids can sense it and then often start feeling the same emotions. Planning frequent breaks during your travel can help everyone remain calm and decrease stress. If you’re driving, make pit stops every few hours, for bathroom breaks, snacks or drinks. If flying, leave plenty of extra time to avoid harried waits in security lines and mad dashes through terminals. When in your destination, keep your itinerary loose, with plenty of free time, so you come back home refreshed and recharged.
