If you’re looking for a photo opportunity — whether a well-planned family picture or encouraging the kids to take up photography — Florence is generally the spot to be. Narrow down the location with this list of best photo-op spots in the city.
Infiltrate your kids’ Instagram or lock a great group shot in for your family Christmas photo at any one of these top spots.
The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore
Also known as The Duomo, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is one of the most iconic stops in Florence. It’s the third-largest church in the world and boasts a red-brick dome and incredibly ornate detailing all along its exterior. Take a closer look and read the story the chiseled images are trying to tell around every corner. One memorable angle to look for — get a rooftop shot of the family with The Duomo as the backdrop.
The breathtaking panoramic views from the Piazzale Michelangelo may be difficult to beat. It’s difficult to tell what the main focal point should be, the replica of Michelangelo’s “David” statue with family, candid shots walking through the museum and the Gardens of Irsis, or classic sweeping views of the city below with the family standing front and center.
Make your way to Florence’s town hall, the Palazzo Vecchio. You’ll be able to get a great picture of the Piazza della Signoria below, or another photo op with (yet another) copy of Michelangelo’s “David” statue.
Ponte Alla Carraia
Really any bridge over the River Arno would suffice, but the Ponte alla Carraia is something special. Line up for a photo on the five-arched bridge over the glistening water, offering a beautiful view of the city to one end and the family to the other — or just snap a great picture of the bridge on its own.
Take It to the Streets
Pick a cobblestone street in Florence, any cobblestone street, and you’re already closer to a picturesque moment than you would be at home. The rustic architecture mixed with local floral touches and quaint city streets, and you have a top-notch family picture on your hands.
The 16th-century Mercato del Porcellino was once a place to buy luxury goods and statues and still boasts its grand allure from Roman times. The marketplace still boasts a wide variety of goods, along with impressive statues and a famous fountain. Take your pick and say formaggio!
