Budget

Visiting Poland is like a walk through time. With some buildings older than our entire country, history and charming beauty surround you at every step. Whether bringing the kids to explore your family’s history or just seeking some old-world culture on a family vacation, Poznań should be on your list. While it doesn’t have all the trappings and metropolitan pull of Warsaw, it has off-the-beaten-path attractions and more local experiences — not to mention, more budget-friendly fares.

Begin with breakfast at Weranda Caffe in Poznań, Poland, and kick the day off with some sweet, whimsical décor, coffee and homemade pastries. Try the local Jaglanka yogurt dish, sweets or the old standby of scrambled eggs for the kids at $3–5.

Downtown Poznan is literally filled with free activities, from exploring historic Town Hall to strolling impeccable cobblestone streets. You’ll get a workout exploring all the incredible architecture and impressive city views while touring the city streets. Window shop or stop in and meet the locals. Shop around for some affordable and authentic goods to bring home, but don’t forget to take full advantage of the constant photo ops — the city is like a living postcard.

Visit Old Market Square; the picturesque locale dates back to the 1500s and is littered with landmarks. Stroll along, finding the Imperial Castle, Poznań, and get a good look from the outside or opt for a tour.

While the kids (and you) may need a snack at this point, 1901 Café and Lunch is a great stop to rest and refuel. Grab a coffee and a small bite for less than $10–15 per person, or enjoy a cocktail and a view at Weranda Take Away. The outdoor dining and cocktail venue offers live music, DJs and all-ages fun for an affordable price.

Active families will love Lake Malta. The man-made lake boasts pristine running, biking and walking trails — all for free. Check out boat rentals before you go or discuss with your concierge or Airbnb host about the best way to get out on the lake.

Dine on classic Polish and European cuisine at A Noz Widelec. The vegetarian- and vegan-friendly restaurant serves up understated elegance and elevated Polish fare with a twist. It’s definitely for foodies looking for a new experience in an unassuming environment — and a great way to broaden the picky eater’s palate. Full meals are priced less than $23, so enjoy!
