Budget

Whether you’re driving through the state’s stunning parks and beaches or making Richmond, Virginia, your next family vacation destination, this is one city where you can get away with a lot for a little — even with your brood.

With plenty of foodie fun, adventure activities and local shopping, Richmond is an affordable locale with a lot to offer. Time the trip right for the changing leaves and vibrant fall foliage and you’ll get even more bang for your buck, while even just strolling the streets can feel like a worthwhile retreat.

Fuel Up

Start with a good old-fashioned breakfast with the kids at Moore Street Café. The breakfast menu boasts a wide variety of dishes to start your day, with something for every palate. Choose from something quick and simple, like various egg dishes as low as $3.50, or go all out and fill up with a hearty breakfast for around $5.50–8.50. Grab some caffeine or fruit for natural energy, as your family has a lot of exploring to do in town.

Getting Around

Conveniently for you and the little ones, getting around Richmond is also affordable, as the city is pretty walkable. Get your steps in or cut your time in half and rent bikes for $6–8 an hour, $40 for the day. The kids will love the freedom (they think) they have leading the pack, while exploring town and finding the next shop or activity to explore. Take advantage of the city’s public transportation system, but Lyft, Uber and cabs will be readily available for nightlife, as well, for when mom and dad want to have some fun.

Getting Outside

Another great way to get the most out of Richmond is by immersing yourselves in the regional, seasonal natural beauty. Rent gear and get out on the water with kayaks, paddle boards and even rafting on the James River. Scenic hikes are always a must at Forest Hill Park or the North Bank Trail of the Richmond Slave Trail for some history. You can also get your steps in shopping and sightseeing through Richmond’s downtown area.

Shops and More

For some manmade beauty, take the kids for a walk along Broad Street, shopping new and vintage, or make your way to the Museum District.

Don’t forget to make time for dinner in downtown later and take in the al fresco dining all summer and long into the autumn as stunning fall foliage rolls in. The city, with a town feel, is definitely ready for your last-minute summer vacation and fall-foliage getaways.
