Travel Tips

Mom and Dad may love Halloween, but you might want to think twice before taking the kids to one of your favorite Halloween bashes around the world. To avoid scarring kids for life, choose one of these family-friendly Halloween events sure to please the entire family, regardless of your age.

The World’s Largest Halloween Party at The Louisville Zoo

Each year, Louisville Zoo puts on what it calls the World’s Largest Halloween Party. Whether or not that’s actually the case, it’s still a family favorite around the region, thanks to its totally treats-not-tricks atmosphere. Kids 11 and under enjoy trick-or-treating and meeting some friendly costumed characters. Better yet, the event takes place multiple weekends throughout October, so you can make this visit work for your family’s travel schedule.

Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns

Pack the stroller and enjoy a nighttime stroll with the fam through Chicago Botanic Garden. One-thousand jack o’ lanterns light the garden up, Oct. 16–20 and 23–27. It’s the perfect low-key activity to enjoy as a crew, as you admire the intricately carved pumpkins with nary a costume in sight.

The Flagstaff Arboretum Pumpkin Walk

If you’d rather show off your own pumpkin carving skills than admire those of others (or, you know, do both), the Pumpkin Walk at The Arboretum at Flagstaff is just the event for you. Grab some pumpkins, take them back to your Airbnb and get to carving. Then, drop off your masterpieces at the arboretum during the day before returning at night to see your own pumpkin artwork on display alongside all the others. In addition to the beautiful pumpkins, you’ll also enjoy classic fall treats like hot apple cider and hot chocolate.

Scottsdale Spooktacular Hot Air Balloon Festival

Combine more than 20 spectacular hot air balloons and more than 4,000 pounds of candy and what do you have? The Scottsdale Spooktacular Hot Air Ballon Festival. This family-friendly event has it all, so everyone can be satisfied, no matter your level of spookiness. The spook-adverse will enjoy trick-or-treating, live music and balloon rides, while those wanting something a bit more thrilling can take a walk down the haunted trail.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

And, of course, any Disney-loving kid (or adult) will adore the annual Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Children are invited to dress up and trick-or-treat around the park. Hyped up on candy, kids will love the after-dark activities, such as a Halloween parade and fireworks show.
