Listicles

The South Asian terrain of Sri Lanka is diverse and wild — perfect for an adventurous hiking trip with your partner, active kids or adventurous self. The small island country located in the Indian Ocean boasts views of the Arabian Sea to one side, Bay of Bengal to the other and ancient shrines and temples within.

Pack your weather-wicking clothes, comfortable and study shoes and get on the move — the vistas along the way will have you ready to get your steps in.

Sigiriya

Head to the ancient city ruins of Sigiriya — we are talking fifth-century cities and rock fortresses — on your trip to Sri Lanka. Whether heading out on an expertly led tour or well-researched, self-guided trek, the scenic hikes and varied trails will leave your crew breathless in the best way.

Scenic hikes and climbing expeditions can be had at Pidurangala Rock or the canyons of Cobra Hood Cave. See some wildlife at Minneriya National Park and even sit back for a safari ride through the wildlife sanctuary.

Haputale

Located in the Badulla District, Haputale is home to waterfalls and scenic overlooks galore, so dress for a quick dive and refresh. Head to Diyaluma Falls, the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, with one point drop.

Hike to Lipton’s Seat to take in panoramas of the famous tea farm, or stick to Eagle Rock viewpoint trails for sweeping views of the countryside. Think of the epic family photos or use this as optimal time to meditate and take in the peace and quiet.

Ella

Ella is another small town in the Badulla District, so travelers and families can easily hit a few sites in one visit. Ella offers jungle views from Ravana Falls and the Nine Arches Bridge. You’ll feel completely surrounded by wilderness, with even the high-climbing mountains around you covered in forests below and clouds above.

Depending on your family’s activity level and comfort adventuring into the unknown, one of these tours can be perfect for your group. With so many local and expertly led tours at your disposal, you can head out into the unknown with all the confidence of a local.
