Destinations / Europe

The coastal city of Dubrovnik, in the south, is perhaps the most popular destination in Croatia for families. The red roof tops of the white buildings are a strong contrast to the jewel-toned Adriatic Sea surrounding the city, making it a picturesque stop for many cruise ships. The city is known for being affordable for families looking for a seaside vacation.

The foodies of the family will find more than their share of enjoyment in Croatia. The local cuisine, which prides itself on fresh ingredients and local flavors, is gaining a strong reputation among the epicurean world. Throughout the country, restaurants and taverns serve hearty, flavorful dishes following a Mediterranean theme and gourmet restaurants that elevate traditional recipes are popping up around the country. Five Croatian restaurants now proudly boast Michelin stars and for good reason. The cuisine takes advantage of the country’s delicious cheeses, fresh local seafood, locally raised meats, and fresh fruits and vegetables that grow well in the temperate climate. Local dishes worth trying include skradinski rizoto (a traditional rice dish made with meat), peka (a dish of roasted meat and vegetables) and strukli (a baked cheese pie dish).

During the warmer months families will love exploring Croatia’s extensive coastline and numerous islands, some virtually untouched by modern conveniences. A portion of the coastline, known as the Dalmatian Coast, is often regarded as one of the most beautiful places in Europe to visit. The waters of the Adriatic Sea are calm and the color of bluest blue. Beaches are mostly pebbly with the occasional rocky shore thrown in for good measure and swimming is a way of life for Croatians who live near the coastline. With temperate conditions that last throughout the summer months, spending a vacation in a coastal village is ideal for families with children of all ages.

Croatia is home to 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites with more than a dozen more locations being considered for future UNESCO protection. Current sites include the Old City of Dubrovnik, Lubenice, the Cathedral of Saint James in the medieval city of Sibenik, Plitvice Lakes National Park and the historic city of Trogir.

Game of Thrones fans will be thrilled to visit locations from their favorite show as parts of the series were filmed throughout Croatia. These locations aren’t just a way to feel like part of the show, but they are ideal for exploring Croatian nature, history and culture as they are genuine landmarks, not just movie sets. Enthusiasts can visit Krka National Park, the location of the House of Black and White, as well as numerous nature backdrops throughout the series, Trogir, used for the City of Qarth, and many more.
