North America

Bicycling enthusiasts have something to look forward to in 2021 — a 750-mile path running through New York to the Canadian border is now open to the public. First announced in 2017, the Empire State Trail officially opened in December 2020.

Most of the funds for the Empire State Trail went toward creating 350 miles of new trails, adding to the 400 miles of trails that already existed. The trail connects hundreds of local communities across 27 counties. It will offer economic benefits to these local communities, as many visitors travel there just to experience the trail.

Three trails make up the entire Empire State Trail network. The Hudson Valley Greenway Trail begins in Manhattan along the Hudson River and runs through the Hudson Valley to Albany. The Champlain Valley Trail is an on- and off-road trail connecting Albany to Rouses Point, near the Canadian border. The Erie Canalway Trail spans 365 miles between Albany and Buffalo along the Erie Canal. This trail is currently unfinished.

The trail is open to bicyclists and walkers of all ages and skill levels.

The Creepy Appeal of Dark Tourism

While the term dark tourism applies more widely to places associated with tragedies, death and the grimmer moments in history, at its heart is a fascination with the bizarre, mysterious and spooky — qualities certain to attract older kids and teens. While sites of mass tragedy may not be suitable, you can enliven family travel with stops at some creepy places.
