North America

Wisconsin is a family traveler’s dream — beautiful scenery, great food and an endless list of things to see and do. With some of the country’s wackiest roadside attractions, it’s a great place to take a family road trip to discover some of the best Americana around. Check out our handy list for some of the quirkiest stops to make on your next trip.

See Goats Grazing on Rooftops

Sister Bay is home to Al Johnson’s, a Swedish restaurant known for goats grazing on its grass-covered roof. Enjoy the whole Scandinavian experience, from staff dressed in Swedish-themed uniforms to traditional foods like Swedish pancakes with lingonberries, but the goats on the roof make it a must-stop roadside attraction.

Visit the House with a Rock in It

In 1995, a giant boulder rolled down a hill and landed in a house in Fountain City along the Mississippi River, turning it into a classic piece of roadside Americana now known as Rock in House.

Explore Dr. Evermor’s Sculpture Park

Located in Sumpter off of U.S. Highway 12, this outdoor sculpture park is a fun oddity created from the mind and hands of a salvage artist named Thomas Every, better known as Dr. Evermor. This outdoor gallery is home to hundreds of unique sculptures crafted from discarded metal, including many animals (like a 17-foot-tall spider) and creatures straight out of the artist’s imagination, like the most well-known piece, the 50-foot-high and 120-foot-wide “Forevertron.”

Visit the Bobblehead Hall of Fame

If you’re driving through Milwaukee, don’t forget to stop at this fun museum, where you can see bobblehead versions of all your favorites, from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the cast of Duck Dynasty to your favorite athletes. You can even order your own customized bobblehead.

See the World’s Largest Everything (almost)

Wisconsin is home to a lot of the “world’s largest” attractions, making for a fun stop to see something interesting while stretching your legs. From the world’s largest fish, a giant fiberglass musky in the town of Hayward, to the world’s largest penny in Woodruff, driving through Wisconsin gives you plenty of quirky photo ops along the way.

The Creepy Appeal of Dark Tourism

While the term dark tourism applies more widely to places associated with tragedies, death and the grimmer moments in history, at its heart is a fascination with the bizarre, mysterious and spooky — qualities certain to attract older kids and teens. While sites of mass tragedy may not be suitable, you can enliven family travel with stops at some creepy places.
